HAPPY BIRTHDAY PONG!
Atari's iconic game of PONG, based off of Ralph Baer's famous brown box presentation. Thanks to Nolan Bushnell for bringing the paddle tennis game he and fellow Ampex employees witnessed at the Profit Caravan in Burlingame, California where he played it during the Magnavox Odyssey demonstration. UPDATED INTELLIVISION CLASSICS HEADED TO PLAYSTATION HOME
The Intellivision classics Astrosmash, Shark! Shark! and Night Stalker have been updated, keeping the feel and gameplay of the originals while adding brighter, more colorful graphics and fun new features. Being referred to as Intellivision Gen2, it marks the first time that original Intellivision games have been re-released in a format different from their original early eighties code.
Keeping the basic look of the games recognizable to tickle the memories of our lifelong fans: still a bit blocky, but with a retro-pixel-inspired look. The goals and play of the games immediately feel like the originals, but with added levels, features and challenges. We worked to capture the best of Intellivision, then pushed that best further.
In Astrosmash, you blasted meteors falling to the planet's surface while avoiding UFOs in a fast-paced, heart-pounding game. In Astrosmash Gen2, you are still blowing up those meteors, but now the game features more types of UFOs, more pronounced difficulty level progressions, and base weapon power-ups. If Astrosmash was your game, you'll quickly get back into the intense rhythms of this game of survival!
In Shark! Shark!, you were a little fish that grew larger as you ate other fish. And even the smallest fish could take on the deadly shark. Well, in Shark! Shark! Gen2 you are still a fish eating other fish, you still try to take down the shark, but your food and foes both swim in a wide variety of dizzying new patterns. And, if you are fortunate enough to win the mermaid's heart, you power through bonus rounds as well!
In Night Stalker, you raced through an underground labyrinth of bat and spider-filled tunnels, avoiding and blasting robots of ever-increasing intelligence. Well, get running and find your gun; Night Stalker Gen2 is still filled with bats and spiders, but now it has a greater variety of killer robots, each more challenging to confront, along with a variety of maze structures to sweat through!

GOODBYE TO VIDEOGAME PIONEER AND FRIEND
Rest in Peace Bill Kunkel (9/3/2011) A kind thank you to the man that inspired me as a child and teen, scribed for my personal business as an adult, shared valuable knowledge to help me teach my undergraduate students for a lifetime and honored me by asking me to do the cover artwork for his biography - Bill, you will be missed.
BILL's BIOGRAPHY
Bill Kunkel was the executive editor of Electronic Games Magazine in the early 1980s. More recently, Bill was editor-in-chief of Tips & Tricks magazine from January 2007 until August 2007 when it was cancelled. His nickname is "The Game Doctor" based on a column he has written for several magazines (including both versions of Electronic Games, VG&CE, EGM and CGW) and game sites (including HappyPuppy.com, PostalNation.net and J2Games.com).
Kunkel has been a game journalist, author of numerous strategy guides, a game designer, expert witness and taught several courses in Game Design for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). He remains active in the industry, having served as editor-in-chief of Tips & Tricks during its final year of publication (2007). He continues as a member of Running With Scissors and EIC of Postal Nation (PostalNation.net) and now writes regularly for J2Games.com. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Classic Gaming Expo in 1999 along with the other co-founders of the original Electronic Games magazine, Arnie Katz and Joyce Worley-Katz. The trio revived the EG title for several years in the early 90s for Sendai/Decker. As Subway Software, the trio were involved as designers on well over a dozen video and computer games, including Bart's Nightmare (Acclaim) and Batman Returns (Konami).
Dubbed "The Grandfather of video game journalism" Kunkel published his memoirs under the title Confessions of The Game Doctor available at Rolenta Press. Kunkel is also well-known as a ground-breaking wrestling journalist and cartoonist dating back to the 1970s.
He wrote for comics, with stories being published at DC in 1977-1978 including Superman, Madame Xanadu, and Vigilante; and at Marvel, Spider-man in 1978 - 1979. Starting in 1979, he wrote Richie Rich for Harvey Comics.
He was the "must-read" columnist during the early days of Pro Wrestling Torch playing a key part in turning the small newsletter into a wrestling newsletter powerhouse. Kunkel later moved to Wrestling Perspective as a featured columnist and cartoonist. Along with the Phantom of the Ring, Kunkel's work for Wrestling Perspective attracted respect and prestige to the publication. |

NAMCO BANDAI TO REINVENT CLASSIC ARCADE FRANCHISES
Namco Bandai announced today a new internal brand that will focus on reinventing classic arcade franchises like Pac-Man and Galaga.
Some of the finest arcade-style experiences on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network have emerged from Namco Bandai, as the company has attempted to reinvigorate older properties through games like Galaga Legions and Pac-Man Championship Edition.
The publisher revealed today plans to continue the trend under a new name. Namco Generations will be the new brand through which Namco Bandai will continue to release classic arcade updates.
The first entry under the new brand identity, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, is already available on XBLA and for PSN. Galaga Legions DX and Aero-Cross (based on 1985's Metro-Cross) are also in line to appear in the coming months. |

VIRTUAL PLAY SAVES THE DAY! DS INTELIVISION LIVES! LIVES!
Keith Robinson can sleep now, as after several years of hunting a worthy publisher has seen the light and finally, on September 16th, the long wait will be over. The DS version emulates the Intellivision's 12-button keypad via the touch-screen by displaying original button overlay graphics. This greatly improves the clunky control present on previous versions (PS2/GameCube/X-BOX) and with head-to-head local wireless gameplay, dare I say it, makes for a more enjoyable experience than playing Intellivision games on the original hardware.
Here is the complete list of games featured,
including three unreleased game titles: BlowOut, Hard Hat and Take Over.
Armor Battle, Astro Smash, Auto Racing, B-17 Bomber, Bomb Squad, Boxing, Bowling, Brickout, Buzz Bombers, Blow Out, Checkers, Chip Shot Golf, Classic Baseball, Classic Basketball, Classic Football, Classic Hockey, Crown of Kings, Decathlon, Deep Pockets, Frog Bog, Hard Hat, Hover Force, Learning Fun 1, Learning Fun 2, Minotaur, Moto Cross, Mountain Madness, Night Stalker, Pin Ball, Poker & Blackjack, Reversi, Roulette, Royal Dealer, Sea Battle, Sharp Shot, Shark! Shark!, Skiing, Slam Dunk Basketball, Slap Shot Hockey, Snafu, Space Armada, Space Battle, Space Cadet,Space Hawk, Space Spartans, Spiker! Volleyball, Star Strike, Sub Hunt, Super Pro Football, Stadium Mud Buggies, Takeover, Thin Ice, Thunder Castle, Tower of Doom, Triple Action, Utopia,Vectron, World Champ Baseball and Wrestling
Considering you get three games for a dollar, you really can't find a better way to spend your money! |

ARCADE AMBIANCE 1992 AUDIO CD NOW AVAILABLE
The fourth and final release of our popular Arcade Ambiance is now available.
This collection is as it was. Filled with the electronic hums and beeps you remember along with classic sounds such as the shuffle of the crowd, coin changer samples, Attract modes and more!
"I closed my eyes today and took a virtual walk through a mid 80s arcade. I accomplished this seemingly impossible feat via the latest edition of GDG's Arcade Ambiance series. Soon, I could almost smell the snacks and see the players, hear their arguements and the small sounds of quarters being lined up along the coin-op controller rims in order to determine order of play. Then, like a symphony conductor, my ear would seek out familiar groupings of sound effects and delightfully manic arcade machine music, allowing me to identify a game here, a game there. But mostly I allowed the sounds of a wonderful past time to simply wash over me. For veteran gamers, this is mood audio of the first order."

SEWING THE SEEDS OF RETRO: CROCHETED ATARI 2600
Who said that grandma's skill set wasn't that useful? It's a custom crocheted Atari 2600, complete with two controllers, a game cartridge, and Pitfall on the screen. Amazing! These is exactly the sort of old school stuff we'd be filling our homes and offices up with if it was for sale in stores.
Now the real proof comes when someone knits us a next-gen system complete with a multiplayer game playing out on the crocheted screen in -- wait for it -- high definition. That'd be like a million lines of yarn or something. Better get to knitting before Super HDTV gets invented.

EUROPEAN VIDEO GAME ADDICTION CLINIC OPENS Europes first video
game addiction detox clinic, Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants, has opened
in Amsterdam to treat video game addicts. While this may seem unusual, keep in
mind that several individuals died in China last year playing games. In fact,
the Chinese government opened several clinics in their part of the globe. Claims
of withdrawal-type symptoms, such as sweating and shaking, have been recorded.
According to claims, the symptoms may not cease until the afflicted get a chance
to look at a computer screen again. Ken Baker, of Smith and Jones states, ""We
have kids who don't know how to communicate with people face-to-face because they've
spent the last three years talking to somebody in Korea through a computer. Their
social network has completely disappeared." Game addiction is similar to
other addictions in that the user often plays a game to escape real world problems
and reality. Many gamers' brains produce endorphins, which can apparently give
them a high similar to that experienced by gamblers or drug addicts. If your reading
this, you may be succeptable! | | SPACE
WAR PROGRAMMER GOES TO THE NEXT LEVEL We are sad to report
that Alan Kotok, one of the 1962 MIT students that was largely responsible for
the creation of Space War, suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 64 in his
home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Space War is argueably the first computer game
ever designed and was made on a PDP-1 mainframe computer using only 9k of memory.
The game featured two battling spaceships and become a major influence in the
development of games throughout the years, most notably Nolan Bushnell's Computer
Space from Atari. | Slug

FOUNDER OF ATARI NOLAN BUSHNELL ENTERS BISTRO BIZ Nolan Bushnell
is at it again! The founder of Chuck E. Cheese and the original Atari has announced
a new food chain that will combine video games and casual setting for adults.
Touch screens will not only let you order food, but each customer will be able
to engage in games, including multiplayer. The first Media Bistro
will open this fall. Touch
screen monitors will be placed at every station, and won't just be used for placing
orders. Bushnell promises that over 70 casual and trivia-type video games will
be available at each station. Not isolated from one another, the stations can
be networked together, to allow a couple or group of people to play bingo, trivia,
or any other game available. "There
will be media everywhere, interactivity everywhere. This is not going to be candlelight
dinner," Bushnell said. The walls of the restaurant will be plain, allowing
for digital images to be projected onto them, such as a movie preview, or a more
serene outdoor snowfall scene. So
far $12 million has been invested into developing software for the project. Bushnell
expects the first restaurant to open this fall in Los Angeles, with more obviously
to follow, should the venture be a success. To
cut costs there are no plans to include waiters at Media Bistro. You order your
food just the way you want it, and runners deliver it to you. Each 2-3 minute
game will cost each participant a quarter, all but assuring the machines will
have more money fed into them nightly than the average American coin-op machine. |

show that ran for two seasons in the early '80s, where contestants competed by
answering trivia questions about video games to earn the right to play the coin-ops

points. The show aired on television stations across the USA, generally in a Saturday
morning or early afternoon time slot. It featured the hottest video games of that
time. The series which was hosted by Mark Richards during its first year,

HOW TO GET THE NEW "PAC-MAN VS" GAME Namco Hometek
and Nintendo of America have announced details regarding the availability of Pac-Man
vs. for the Nintendo GameCube, and, while the title won't be up for sale, there

MICROSOFT AND NINTENDO WORKING TOGETHER A famous quote dictates,
"My enemy's enemy is my firend." An unnofficial alliance (for now) has
formed between two unlikely parties - Nintendo and Microsoft. In an attempt to
gain more market share from the dominate player Sony, there are reports of cooperation
between the company that Gates built and the Big 'N'. Despite being in the same
business, Nintendo hopes to release more games and systems while Microsofts interests
are more related to controlling the future living room media delivery hub. With
both companies being neighbors in Redmond, Washington there is a great deal brewing
behind closed doors, and it is more than simply borrowing a cup of sugar!

retail vendors like GDG!
NINTENDO TO RETIRE MARIO?? Mario has been Nintendo's primary
character since his humble beginnings as the 'Jumpman' in the original Donkey
Kong in the early eighties. However, it looks like the Big 'N' is about to make
some drastic changes under the direction of Satoru Iwata, the new Nintendo president.
It seems that Nintendo may be replacing both Mario and the Pokemon franchises
with new star characters to promote their changing needs for the changing videogame
market. | |
3DO CLOSES DOORS It is no secret that 3DO founder Trip Hawkins,
original founder of Electronic Arts, has been supplimenting the 3DO company with
personal cash since the fall of the 3DO multiplayer and the company's move as
a software developer and publisher. However, it seems that this action has finally
come to an end as every single employee at 3DO was released this week and the
company has filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. While the latest games
from the 3DO company haven't been much to excite us, we still remember the thrills
from the 3DO multiplayer in the 90's and are sad to see its demise. We wish all
the previous 3DO employees luck with their future ventures.
MANUFACTURING OF NES AND SNES UNITS TO CEASE While this may

this September. | |
INFOGRAMES OFFICIALLY CHANGES NAME TO ATARI As rumored by
GDG almost 8 months ago, Infogrames has changed its name to Atari, Inc. in an
effort to boost its profile with consumers. Chief
Executive Bruno Bonnell announced that the new ticker symbol would be 'ATAR',
and the newly named Nasdaq shares soared up more than 26 percent at $6.50 at the
close of trading after having climbed as high as $7.02. The
Atari name is the most storied in video gaming, dating back to the early 1970s
when Nolan Bushnell and a team of engineers at Atari created "Pong,"
the arcade video game that was so popular that machines sometimes jammed because
they were overflowing with quarters. Over
the years, Atari went through many incarnations. At one point it operated as a
subsidiary of what was then called Warner Communications and is now part of AOL
Time Warner. Then a stand-alone company in 1996, when it was acquired by JTS Corp.
In early 1998 JTS sold the Atari rights and assets to toymaker Hasbro Inc. Infogrames,
founded in France in 1983, acquired the rights to the Atari brand in early 2001
when it bought Hasbro Interactive. In October 2001 the company relaunched the
brand and began using it as a games publishing label.

SEGA TO EXPAND SONIC FRANCHISE Sega
has revealed plans to turn their spiky-haired trademark character into a much
stronger force with a new animated television show, a new line of Sonic toys,
and -- of course -- many more great Sonic videogame titles. Debuting in Japan
this April, the new Sonic animated television series will also hit the U.S. and
European airwaves later this fall. Although Sega has already produced a Sonic
cartoon series here in the States, the company is planning to work more closely
on the new Japanese production to bolster Sonic's new image both here and abroad.
Sega's toy unit is also following the latest Japanese trends as it ramps
up production for an all-new line of Sonic collectables and action figures. And
let's not forget about the videogames -- Sega plans to put out four brand-new
Sonic titles in Japan alone and a whopping five here in the U.S. and in Europe,
where the series has traditionally been much more popular.

CLASSIC VIDEOGAME FICTION BY D.B. WEISS He's
nearing thirty, but feckless Adam Pennyman has finally found a purpose: The Catalogue
of Obsolete Entertainments, his encyclopedic analysis of every videogame ever
made. His research hits a snag with Lucky Wander Boy, the surreal, epic videogame
that ruled his world years ago. Despite its underground cult following, Lucky
Wander Boy seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. GDG
highly recommend this refreshing reading alternative! Learn more at the official

"SADNESS COMES AGAIN..." by Curt Vendel, Atari Historian.
Another
sad chapter is added to the Atari Legacy: Feb 7th, 2003 marks the true
end of an era unlike any other... What
started out in a garage at 2965 Scott Blvd. Santa Clara Ca. will come to an end
at 675 Sycamore in Milpitas today as Midway drops the axe and "Midway Games
West" (Formerly Atari Games Corporation) lays off the remaining 30 employee's
working there. Many will stay on for a few weeks tying up loose ends and shutting
off the lights, but officially today is the day that the worlds Pioneering Video
Game Company's legacy and existence comes to an end... In
the coming weeks the building will be cleared of people, furniture, equipment,
hardware and paperwork. What was the birthplace of many laughs, smiles, challenges
and thrills will slowly and quietly drift off into the nothingness that has been
commonplace within the Valley for decades. To
be that last person... the one who will stand in the doorway, looking in and seeing
the emptiness of it all, to listen to the quietness that itself will echo a myriad
of electronic bleeps and beeps, synthesized theme music and trademark sound effects
that many recognize in a heartbeat. The fading glow of screens no more, of flashes
and pulses emitting onto the walls, ceiling and long gone faces of gamers and
engineers alike... The door will lock and the final car will exit the parking
lot, all that is left is a shell that stands alone, stands proud as its ghosts
within play-on until the next tenant moves in... |

HOLLYWOOD GOES GAME CRAZY While
Hollywood has really cranked out some horrendous game-based movies in the past,
the last few have been considerably better. As games approach and evolve more
of a story-telling meduim, we suspect that they will get better, as the two mediums
begin to merge. We actually have high hopes for some of thes in development. Others,
of course, we have grave concerns...

its wake was a stream of Pac-Man products that were gobbled up by its fans. It

items manufactured over the past twenty years. This new book catalogs many of

to videos and animation cels. Each caption includes a guide to today's market

CLOSES DOORS AND THE WORLD MOURNS
The creator of the Neo-Geo has ceased operations and
bows out gracefully after almost a quarter century. SNK is best known for their
Neo Geo MVS arcade system, home Neo-Geo console, and the recent and adored Neo-Geo
Pocket. SNK was one of the few companies still supporting 2-D gaming. Fortunately,
some of their legacy will survive as some of the right's to the Neo Geo products
have been purchased by other surviving game companies such as Capcom. While SNK
is gone for good, and will be dearly missed, we may still be graced with future
updates to such classics as Ikari Warriors, Fatal Fury,
King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown
and others. SNK Official Closing Statement: "Dear all NeoGeo fans/customers:
It is with deepest grief that in the fall of 2001, SNK will close the company
history in its business. It was all of your favor and encouragement which made
our passion running to make better games for SNK fans. We'd like to take this
opportunity to thank every one of you for your continuous help and assistance
since SNK's incorporation in Japan July in 1978. Without your support SNK would
not have been possible throughout 23 years of operation. With all our heart-felt
gratitude, thank you once again."

State lawmakers in New Hampshire may tax videogames for money to help compensate

often feature sexual violence or portray woman as objects of sexual gratification.

SEGA CHAIRMAN DIES OF HEART ATTACK
Friday, March 9, 2001 -- 74 year old Japanese businessman and philanthropist Isao
Okawa passed away from a heart attack. Both SEGA Enterprises and CSK Corporation,
a conglomerate of over 90 companies were under his direction. Okawa oversaw SEGA
as it helped to push the videogames industry from a novelty sector to an international
business with billions of dollars per year in revenue. Just months ago, Isao Okawa
returned to SEGA his entire personal stake in the company as well as other valuable
assets in the amount in excess of $700 million dollars to calm investors.
However, Okawa most noted accomplishment may well be the charitable organization
known as the Okawa Foundation. Confined to a bed for almost nine years victimized
by pulmonary tuberculosis, his years of suffering undoubtedly contributed to his
extraordinary generosity in later life. He also bestowed upon the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology a $27 million donation to establish the Okawa Center for
Future Children in 1998. |
Isao Okawa 1926 - 2001 "I believe that God gives the momentum of
the times as an aid to those who grasp prophetic manifestations and seize upon
those moments to create a new business. I believe as well that God gives these
same individuals social responsibility, a mission to contribute to the world at
large." -- Isao Okawa | WENDY'S

INFOGRAMES
ACQUIRES HASBRO & THE ATARI LABEL What
can $100 million buy? Well, it has bought Hasbro Interactive and Games.com for
Infogrames. While the negotiation is subject to approval, and won't officially
close until early 2001, it seems that the deed is indeed done. The licensing agreement
allows for Infogrames to publish Hasbro properties on ALL platforms for a whopping
15 years, with a 5 year possible extension. The chairman and CEO of Infogrames,
Bruno Bonnell, stated," The deal is to be completed in Q1 2001, so that Frogger
will live to jump another highway." Does this make the future of Atari
games brighter? Well, it just might since it might mean that Infogrames would
produce the titles internally or with its own trusted developers, as opposed to
Majesco. | |

THE
EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL IS COMING HOME, AGAIN
Despite rumors of 1000's of Atari 2600 E.T. cartridges buried in
the desert of New Mexico, NewKidCo, in agreement with Universal Studios and Amblin
Entertainment, will be releasing E.T. Comes Home for
the PlayStation2, Dolphin, Dreamcast, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and X-Box.
The movie E.T. was released in 1982 and grossed $700 million worldwide
but the licensed video & computer games were not as successful. NewKidCo obviously
hopes for a better result with its E.T. license, and so does the
New Mexico Landfill officials. |

PAC-MAN
RECORD New
Hampshire -- In the entire world, Billy Mitchell, a 34 year old hot sauce manufacturer,
is the first and only player to achieve a perfect score in Pac-Man.
With an estimated 10 billion games, for a period of over 20 years, a perfect game
of Pac-Man has never been achieved. More difficult than a MLB pitcher
pitching a hit free game, and higher odds than bowling a perfect game. Mitchell
has achieved the highest of status amongst his peers. Mitchell's first attempt
ended rather ungloriously, after a careless child accidently unplugged a complete
row of games. To obtain the perfect score of 3,333,360 points, Mitchell cleared
all 256 levels eating every dot, power pill, blue ghost, and fruit with a single
Pac-Man. Clearing Pac-Man is a monotonous task. The
first 20 screens have limited differences, and boards 21 to 255 are identical.
During
the final screen, the monitor become covered with random numbers and letters,
making visibility and navigation difficult. On July 3rd, approximately 5 p.m.
EST, a simple "Game Over" softly glowed on the screen. Mitchell also owns the
standing record on Donkey Kong, and has played a single continious
game of Centipede for 47 hours. |
